Kosaciec niski dorasta do 35 (40) cm wysokości i charakteryzuje się wczesnym terminem kwitnienia od kwietnia do maja. W ogrodach spotyka się różne jego odmiany, które różnią się barwą kwiatów (od białego, żółtego, różowego do fioletowego) oraz żyłkowaniem.
